Set up your ClickHouse connection

This article outlines the steps to create a ClickHouse connection.

Supported authentication types

The ClickHouse connector supports the following authentication types for copy and Dataflow Gen2 respectively.

Authentication type Copy Dataflow Gen2
ClickHouse (Username/Password) n/a

Set up your connection for Dataflow Gen2

You can connect Dataflow Gen2 in Microsoft Fabric to ClickHouse using Power Query connectors. Follow these steps to create your connection:

  1. Check capabilities to make sure your scenario is supported.
  2. Complete prerequisites for ClickHouse.
  3. Get data in Fabric.
  4. Connect to ClickHouse data.

Capabilities

  • Import
  • DirectQuery (Power BI semantic models)

Prerequisites

Get data

To get data in Data Factory:

  1. On the left side of Data Factory, select Workspaces.

  2. From your Data Factory workspace, select New > Dataflow Gen2 to create a new dataflow.

  3. In Power Query, either select Get data in the ribbon or select Get data from another source in the current view.

  4. In the Choose data source page, use Search to search for the name of the connector, or select View more to the right of the connector list to see all the connectors available in Data Factory.

  5. If you choose to view more connectors, you can still use Search to search for the name of the connector, or choose a category to see a list of connectors associated with that category.

Connect to ClickHouse data

ClickHouse connector integration with Power BI cloud service requires you to initiate a data gateway.

What is a data gateway?

The on-premises data gateway acts as a bridge to provide quick and secure data transfer between on-premises data (data that isn't in the cloud) and several Microsoft cloud services. These cloud services include Power BI, PowerApps, Power Automate, Azure Analysis Services, and Azure Logic Apps. By using a gateway, organizations can keep databases and other data sources on their on-premises networks, yet securely use that on-premises data in cloud services.

Why is such a gateway required?

Both custom and certified connectors with extra components (for example, an ODBC driver) need the extra component to be installed on the end user machine and require the on-premises data gateway.

Steps required for the integration:

  1. Follow all steps listed in the Power BI Desktop usage.
  2. Install the data gateway. Detailed instructions can be found in Install an on-premises data gateway.
  3. Follow this Microsoft example on how to configure your Power BI service to work with the Gateway.

Set up your connection in a pipeline

Data Factory in Microsoft Fabric doesn't currently support ClickHouse in pipelines.
