Managing Catalog Expressions
Expression-based targeting is the process of creating expressions that define the customers or context you want to target and the type of content you want to deliver. An expression is a condition that Commerce Server 2009 evaluates against profiles to determine whether to deliver content, or perform another action. For example, an expression might be user.totalvisit > 100. If this expression evaluates to "True," then you display a specific piece of content to the customer.
You can use Marketing Manager to create two types of expressions:
Catalog expressions. Specify the products in a catalog to which you can apply a discount.
Target expressions. Identify where, when, and to whom to display content.
After you create target expressions, you can combine them to form a target group. A target group is a collection of expressions and actions. For example, you might create one expression to show a specific piece of content to customers who have visited the site ten times, and another expression to show content to customers who have purchased a soccer shirt. You can combine the two expressions in a target group by using AND or OR statements.
Catalog expressions define the products or categories of products to which you want to apply a discount. For example, you can apply a 30 percent discount on a pair of hiking boots to customers whose favorite outdoor activity is mountain climbing. You use catalog expressions to define what categories, products, or product properties you want to deliver to customers who meet your target criteria.
