Percentile is a measure of non-central position, like quartiles, deciles or quintiles.
All these measures inform us of the position of a value with respect to others. If a value is in quartile 3 (Q3), it would indicate that three quarters of the data is equal to or less than that value.
The data is the grade of the students in a class. If a student has a 9.5 and is in the 85th percentile, it means that 85% of the students have a 9.5 or less.
I found in a web site a good example of percentiles.
Imagine that the height of a group of people is the set of data to study. If a height of 1.75 m is at P80 (80th percentile), it means that 80% of the people in the group are 1.75 or less.
