Azure Django PostgreSQL deploy: Database migration does not work as it should

I am trying to deploy my Django App on Azure with python runtime 3.8 and a PostgreSQL database. I followed the tutorial on microsoft learn (using the web + database experience) , and have structured my app similar to the example.Including a migration of my database in the SSH portal.

I can visit the pages of my app which do not query the database. However, when I go to a page with a db query or the Django admin portal I get an error saying that there is a problem with relations or the database. This leads me to believe that the migration has not actually worked correctly.

I can't seem to figure out what is going wrong. I have tried to do the exact same process with the microsoft example and that works. I looked at my code, but I can't find what is wrong. My project code is stored here!.

In addition, the application logs don't specify a lot of info. It has probably something to do with the database,but I cant seem to figure out what is wrong and I don't know how I can see my PostgreSQL database schema in Azure. If anyone has suggestions, they are very welcome!

Hi, @Nick Mol Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum, Thanks for posting your question.
I think migrations did not run, When the migrations are run via SSH, what is the response?
Also, I would suggest checking in the database to see if there is a table/view called “auth_user”, and I would check the migrations for the same.

Thanks for the response. Attached a photo of the SSH response. How do I check the data in the database? Can I do that via SSH?
I have created a superuser through SSH. It says it created the superuser succesfully. However, when I try logging in in the admin portal it still fails due to the database.

It looks like the migrations are getting applied properly.
You could connect to the Postgres server using a tool like pgAdmin, or if you are not familiar with it, you could use psql per the instructions below:

Build the connection string

Get the psql connection string
a. Portal > Your Postgres Database > Connection Strings – psql

Get the name of the database (probably django)
a. Portal > Your Postgres Database > Databases – (not azure_maintenance, azure_sys, or postgres)

Get the password for the database
a. Portal > Your App Service > Configuration – DATABASE_PASSWORD

Update the connection string with the database name, but exclude the password parameter

Query the database

Open a cloud shell
a. From Azure Portal > click

Connect to the database
a. In the cloud shell, paste in the full connection string with the dbname, but password parameter excluded
b. Type in the password

Query for the table
a. Type \d auth_user to see the schema of the auth_user table
b. Or, type \dt to see a list of all tables

Query for users
a. Type select * from auth_user; to see if the superuser is in fact in the table.

Hi @GeethaThatipatri-MSFT . I am trying to connect to the datbase server, but the web + database experience comes with a vnet. To view my database I will first need to figure out how I can set access to my local IP adress..

Hi Geetha, I solved my issue. In the MSFT example in the tutorial they used a production.py file, which referenced WEBSITE_HOSTNAME as a standard environment variable to determine whether the app was in production. This was not working well, so I created a new settings file for production, and created my own environment variable to determine whether the app is in production or not. Thanks for the help!
