From Azure VM to AVS

Question

Hello,
Is there a supported way to migrate Azure VMs to Azure VMware Solution ? I cannot find any MS documentation for.

Agree, there doesn't seem to be a supported solution for this migration path. You can do VMWare to ASR, but it may not work the other direction.

This thread suggests the only other way is to download the OS VHD and then convert it to VMDK for upload into the datastore. Seems a lot of downtime would be needed.

I believe you're right, after thinking about all this and especially the way ASR works or even Azure Migrate, I don't see how it would be possible.
Downloading then converting VHD IMO it's not a good manner to avoid downtime. So I think it's better to go through the traditional way as we do on-premises to move workloads and services from one machine to another.

As mentioned in the answer above, there isn't any supported solution available as of now. I will share this feedback with the internal team.

It could probably be done via VMware HCX OS Assisted Migration Feature. Not sure if it has been attempted though.

As mentioned, converter can be used to move VMs from Azure to Azure VMware solution. StarWind V2V Converter can be used. Check for more information: https://www.starwindsoftware.com/starwind-v2v-converter
