Error "Credentials Supplied Are Not Sufficient" when mapping to a shared printer hosted on Windows 10 from Windows 11 Client

Hello,

I have a shared USB printer running on a Windows 10 Home machine. I have this printer successfully mapped and working on other Windows 10 clients. However, when I attempt to map the printer to my Windows 11 Home machine, I get the following error:

"The credentials supplied are not sufficient to access this printer" - Same credentials that are working fine from the windows 10 machines.

This seems to be an issue with connecting from the windows 11 client machine, as the connection and credentials work absolutely fine from other windows 10 machines on the same home network.

I've searched for an answer to this for many hours, hoping that someone here can help, thanks!!

I was struggling with the same issue. I tried everything. Turning off password protected printing, modifying registry keys etc. Everything the Internet had to offer.

1. On the Windows 11 computer where the printer is shared, create a local user (lusrmgr.msc) I created a user named "printer" and gave it a password.
2. On the Windows 10/11 computer you are trying to print from, open Control Panel > User Accounts > Windows Credentials. Select Windows Credentials, then select Add Windows Credential.
3. Fill out the fields (server name, user name, password) and click OK.

Now you should be able to add a printer without being prompted for credentials.

If you get the error "The credentials supplied are not sufficient to access this printer" or 0x0000052e, go to Control Panel - Credential Manager, Add a Windows Credential, and then add the print server,and a username that has access to the server. If necessary, make a local user (run lusrmgr.msc) on the print server.

Possibly that's enough, and you can try printing.

But read on if it still doesn't work.

On the sharing pc/server, run (Win+R) mmc.
File-> Add/Remove Snap-in.
Add Print Management. Select localhost.
Select the print server. Right click-Properties -> Security.
Now, you can give domain users and local users permissions to Print, Manage Printers, etc. as needed.

You need to change the local policies as in Windows 11 there is additional protection to connect to local printers.Please follow this steps:

Step 1 :- Open Group policy editor

Press Windows and R key at same time, Windows Run box appeared on your computer screen type in the Run gpedit.msc and hit enter and than Local Group policy editor appeared on screen.

Step 2 :- Go to this path Computer Configuration > administrative Templates >Printers

Double click on point and print restrictions in right side panel a another page will be appeared.

Step 3 :- Select enabled, Tick on users can only point and print to these servers.

Step 4 :- Type in the box your printer computer name. You can skip this option if you don’t have printer server name available.

Step 5 :- Click on When installing driver for a new connection drop down menu and select in drop down menu Do not show warning or elevation prompt.

Step 6 :- Click on When updating drivers for an existing connection drop down menu and select in drop down menu Do not show warning or elevation. prompt. Now click Apply and OK to save change.

I've been beating my head against my desk for the past few hours now that I've upgraded my PC to windows 11 and had this issue. When I would add the printer through 'add a printer' I would be able to see the computer that the printer is plugged into on the network, then would get a login prompt.. to which I would login with the primary login details for that computer (the Microsoft account login w/password - not the Hello PIN). After that, I would see the printer and right click to click 'connect' which would then give yet another login prompt, which led me to this error listed here.

I finally got a resolution when I went to 'file explorer' -> Network -> Open the printer hosting computer and login from there with the host computer user/password -> right click on the printer to connect from there -> rather than get another login screen, it asked if I wanted to install the driver and magically, it was added to my available printers.
