I am trying to follow the Connect to and query Azure SQL Database using .NET and Entity Framework Core tutorial. When I try to run Update-Database from the Package Manager Console I get the following error: A task was canceled. I have provisioned the server with Passwordless Authentication and ran the diagnostics script and there were no issues found. This is the detail:

The error message you are seeing indicates that the task was canceled while trying to acquire a token for authentication.

Can you please confirm that your firewall settings are configured correctly and that you are allowing traffic to and from the Azure SQL Database server and check authentication settings are correct?

I ran the connection script provided by Azure and the only time it worked is when I provided the SQL Server user name and password. I left it blank originally because I have enabled passwordless authentication and that is supposed to use the credentials associated with my Visual Studio account. Which is the same account I use for Azure. The Microsoft Entra admin is setup and so is the authentication type in SQL Server.

I did notice that my home network was labeled as Public so I switched it to Private, but that did not help. This is in my inbound rules.

Added a rule to allow everything to windows defender and it worked! Now, I need a better rule because that is dangerous. Do you know the proper rule to create?

No. The script worked in Powershell when I changed the login info. But the Update-Database command worked after I opened the firewall. Now, I'm trying to run the app localhost and got that error on Post and Get. @Wilko van de Velde I changed the authentication to SQL User name and password to rule out a SQL authentication issue. That worked. However, I am trying to get the Entra authentication to work. That is still failing. So I believe that Entra is not passing the authentication onto SQL Server. I even took my PC out of the equation and deployed to Azure App Service and it still fails to make changes to the database from the web form.

Regardless, my goal is to setup a dev instance with the following characteristics:

On my PC:

VS 2022

Project of type ASP.NET with Entity Framework Core 8.0

Azure:

SQL Server Database

Azure App Service Deployment

I'm out of ideas. You may try to use a different authentication mode, for example: Active Directory Interactive.
