Dear experts, We are facing a issue to restore a windows system image recovery. We have a Dell Server T430 with operating system of Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 (RAID1). In order to recover from backup, I inserted the installation CD, launched “repair”, selected the backup from image, then proceeded. However, I am getting the error message,
“The system image restore failed. Error Details: Windows did not find any disk which it can use for recreating volumes present in backup. Offline disks, cluster shared disks or disks explicitly excluded by user will not be used by Windows. Ensure that disks are online and no disks are excluded by mistake (0x80042414).” Any kind of technical help will be appreciated. Regards Irfan Shahzad

In order to restore your backup, you have to ensure that your server has enough free unpartitioned storage to host the entire restored system.

As already mentioned above, Windows Server 2008 R2 is EoL, so for security reasons, it is highly recommended to run it inside an isolated virtual machine on top of Hyper-V if the upgrade is not possible for whatever reason. That can be achieved in two ways.

    • Install modern Windows Server (2016/2019/2022) with Hyper-V role or free Hyper-V Server 2019, create a new virtual machine from scratch, and restore your backup inside that virtual machine.
    • The second option is to restore the backup first (that is even more preferred if the backup was done on that same hardware) and then P2V (physical to virtual conversion) existing instance of the OS using Microsoft Disk2VHD https://aka.ms/disk2vhd or free V2V Converter https://www.starwindsoftware.com/starwind-v2v-converter.
