Download of Windows 11 updates (UUP) via SCCM DP very slow

Hello dear community,

I have a question about the relatively new Unified Update Platform (UUP) model that is already being used to deploy Windows 11 23H2 updates.

We are using Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager version 2309 to deploy software, updates and operating systems.

When deploying Windows 11 23H2 updates, I noticed that the updates are no longer stored in the c:\Windows\ccmcache folder as before, but first end up in the c:\Windows\ccm\temp folder and are then moved. (I have not yet found out where 😊)

As written, the Windows updates are distributed via SCCM. The problem I have is that Windows 11 updates (on a client) that are distributed via UUP take a very long time (slow) to download. When downloading a Windows 10 update, not UUP, the file downloads and installs very quickly.

Does anyone have any idea why the download via UUP takes so long and what protocols are used to download the updates from the distribution point?

I would appreciate any feedback.

The slow download of Windows 11 updates via SCCM DP may be due to the larger size of the updates and the use of the Unified Update Platform (UUP). UUP updates are downloaded as sparse files, which can take longer to download and install.

It is recommended to optimize Windows 10 or later quality update delivery using Configuration Manager with express installation files and a peer caching technology, as needed. This approach should alleviate the challenges associated with Windows devices downloading large content for installing quality updates.

I find that a bit strange. The download size of the W11 CU is no larger than that of the conventional CUs.

What protocols does the client use to pull the WIndows 11 update (UUP) from the SCCM DP? HTTP, HTTPS or SMB?

Do you know in which folder the files are downloaded? During the download, the update files are saved under C:\ccm\temp. As soon as the download is complete, the downloaded files disappear from the folder. Do you know which folder these files are moved to?

And is it correct that the files are not downloaded to the C:\ccmcache folder?

Hi,

You mentioned: The download size of the W11 CU is no larger than that of the conventional CUs.

That means you do not use the UUP for Windows 11 23H2 updates, it seems the UUP is only used for Windows 11 22H2.

So, you are still deploying the conventional CUs.

And I just deployed and installed the 2024-06 CU, the files are downloaded to the C:\Windows\ccmcache folder.

Hello, this is very interesting. I tried the update installation again just now. I am using W11 23H2 Client. In the test you can see that the files are not stored in the CCMCache folder. They are stored in c:\windows\ccm\temp.

Is there any way to configure this behavior?

In your example, you are using W11 21h2 right? Because the update KB5039213 is for W11 21H2.

Maybe the update deployment behaves differently under Windows 11 23H2?

Which SCCM version are you using?

You're right, I'm using W11 21h2, I will do a test on W11 23h2.

It's expected that the download size of the W11 CU is no larger than the conventional CUs.

That's one of the benefits to use UUP: Up to 30% smaller client downloads for monthly quality updates

I just upgrade from 22H2 to 23H2 in my environment, it already has the latest CU installed, I will test it after the CU of July released.

Here is the update for this thread:

I tried to deploy new CU of July KB5040442 to windows 11 23h2, during the downloading, the files stored both in CCM\temp and ccmcache folder, but the file will be removed from CCM\Temp folder but the file in ccmcache are stay there. And the downloading takes 12 minutes.

Hello, sorry that I have not contacted you for so long, I was on vacation!

Thanks for the test. I think 12 minutes for an update download is a long time, especially if you have a great connection to the DP. What do you think? Do you have any idea why this is the case?

12 minutes is a bit long, I'm going to keep an eye on it, and I'll share my thoughts with you if I have any ideas.
