Error code: 0xfffff9bf when installing an AD LDS instance

Hello

Due to many problems reading the LDAP directory, I decided to uninstall the AD LDS role and the ADAM instance attached to it.

Wanting to reinstall them, I was indeed able to reinstall the AD LDS role, but I can't install the ADAM instance and the ad hoc service.

At the end of the installation, I systematically have an error code 0xfffff9bf.

I can't seem to solve the problem. Does anyone have a lead without me touching the AD that works normally?

In advance, thank you for your answers.

Yann

    Good morning Yann,

You may need to uninstall a recent Windows update.

We have reason to believe that KB5039227 is to blame here for Server 2022. It appears the corresponding update for 2019 is KB5039211. I use the term corresponding loosely. They are unique updates. However, they were released on the same day (June 11th, 2024), and the notes suggest they created at least one identifcal bug in each respective OS.

One June 25th, Microsoft also released KB5039299. This could also be your culprit as once again it shares the same introduced bug. However, this is a preview build and it is less likely that you would have applied it.

My company is in the process of configuring a new network. We were able to succesffully implement the AD LDS (ADAM) instance on our LDAPS server. Unfortunately, two days later the instance began to fail.

Yesterday (July 7th, 2024) I posed a question to the Active Directory subRedditin hopes someone could assist in troubleshooting this. If you would like to see what troubleshooting steps I have taken thus far, follow the link. Aside from an automated moderator's reply, there are no responses yet. You can follow that link, or read the quoted text below for details on what troubleshooting I had completed up to this point.

This morning, I decided that the only item that remained was to one-by-one to remove the updates I had applied on the new VM prior to creating the instance. After removing all updates and reapplying them one-by-one, we determined that KB5039227 introduces some breaking change here. The full removal of the update allowed us to create another ADAM instance.

I have not begun further troubleshooting to see what is going on yet, but this gets it working again. You may want to consider rolling back recent updates, if possible.

    Hello,

Thank you for posting in Q&A forum.

Based on your description, here are some troubleshooting steps that may help resolve the issue:

    1. Check file system integrity:

Run chkdsk C: /f /r (assuming C is your system partition) to check and repair file system errors on the hard disk. This step helps confirm or rule out problems at the file system level.

    1. Uninstall related components:

Make sure to thoroughly uninstall all AD LDS or ADAM related components, including but not limited to any remaining service instances, database files, configuration files, etc. Check and uninstall through the "Uninstall a program" in the Control Panel.

    1. Check Event Viewer:

Check the Event Viewer log for more detailed error messages. Navigate to "Applications and System > Windows Logs" to find any related events that can provide more context about the installation failure.

    1. Dependencies:

Verify that all required Windows components and dependencies for AD LDS are installed and working properly. Missing components will cause installation failure. You can use Server Manager to check and add any missing roles or features.

    1. Disk space:

Make sure there is enough free disk space on the drive where you are trying to install the ADAM instance. AD LDS and ADAM require a certain amount of disk space to store databases and other files, so ensuring that there is enough space is necessary.

    1. Windows Updates:

Make sure your system is up to date with the latest Windows updates. Sometimes, installing the latest updates can resolve the underlying issue.

I hope the information above is helpful.

    Best Regards,

    Yanhong Liu
