On my home network, there is a laptop connected (wifi), desktop connected (ethernet). Both are running Hyper-V.

  • Laptop has Domain Controller vm
  • Desktop has a RD broker vm, RD web vm and RD app vm (to install RDS)

How can Desktop and Laptop connect their external switches for communication between VMs?

    Hi Mal,

Thanks for your post. Based on my experience, it is recommended to create an external vSwitch on each host and plug them into a common physical switch.

To create an external virtual switch,

    1. Open Hyper-V Manager and select Virtual Switch Manger from the right pane.
    2. Select the External type.
    3. Selecet Create Virtual Switch.
    4. Select the host network adapter to connect to.
    5. Once the virtual switch is created, connect the virtual machine to the vSwitch.
    6. Right click the virtual machine and select Settings.
    7. Select Network Adapter.
    8. Select the external virtual switch.

Now the VMs can communicate with each other for the virtual switches are connected through the host network adapters.

    Best Regards,

    Ian Xue
