Try using partition recovery tools like TestDisk . It can scan the HDD for lost or damaged partitions and attempt to restore them.
Disk volume showing red cross and unable to shrink it.
Hello everyone,
I am facing an issue with the HDD of my laptop. I tried to dual boot install ubuntu in my laptop with the "install ubuntu alongside windows boot manager" option and allocated some space to it. After that, the partitions of HDD(Games and Utilities) started showing a cross sign in it and the Disk 1 section is also empty, in the disk management application. I have included the screenshot here.
Here is the screenshot of the Disk management app:

Thank you for posting in Q&A forum.
Please try the suggestion below.
- Check Disk Health: You can do this by opening Command Prompt as an administrator and typing chkdsk /f /r.
- Open Disk Management and see if there are any errors or warnings related to the disk volume. Sometimes, the red cross can indicate a problem with the disk's health or configuration.
- Check the Event Viewer for any error messages related to the disk volume. This can provide more insight into what might be causing the issue.
- Reinstall Ubuntu: If the issue persists, you might need to reinstall Ubuntu. During the installation, manually create partitions instead of using the “Install Ubuntu alongside Windows” option.
I hope the information above is helpful.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to let us know.
Best Regards,
Daisy Zhou
