Good morning, we have a Windows Server 2019 Standard. This is a VM for our Employees to Access remotly for some specific Software. Our other Servers and services is running in AWS. We have RDS Licenses (50 pcs). It works well, AD is working fine. But here´s the Point: We don´t want to use Active Directory anymore. We want to get rid of it.
I created Local Accounts and if i log in, the Server tells me, that the Session is 60 minutes usable, then it disconnects. Can i use the User CAL´s without AD and migrate it on the server if i leave the domain/AD?

If not, do we need to buy Device CALs for Remote Desktop? Is a Device CAL usable without an AD? This Server is the only one Windows Server we are using, so it makes no sense to run this in an AD.

Thanks for help.

    Hello,

It sounds like you’re looking to simplify your setup by removing Active Directory (AD) from your environment. Here are some key points to consider:

User CALs and AD: Unfortunately, User CALs (Client Access Licenses) for Remote Desktop Services (RDS) require Active Directory to function properly. Without AD, User CALs cannot be tracked or managed effectively.

Device CALs: If you want to avoid using AD, you can switch to Device CALs. Device CALs do not require AD and can be used in a workgroup environment. Each device that connects to the server will need a Device CAL.

Session Timeouts: The 60-minute session timeout you’re experiencing is likely due to the grace period for RDS licensing. Once the grace period expires, you need to have valid RDS CALs installed and configured on a license server.

Migrating to Device CALs: To switch from User CALs to Device CALs, you’ll need to purchase the appropriate number of Device CALs and install them on your RDS license server. This will allow your users to connect without the need for AD.

In summary, to continue using Remote Desktop without AD, you’ll need to purchase and configure Device CALs. This should resolve the session timeout issue and allow your employees to access the server without interruptions.

    Best Regards,

    Hania Lian
