Install x86_64 Version of Visual Studio on Windows on ARM

Hey,

I use Windows on ARM and I know it's great that Visual Studio is natively available for the platform.

However I have VSIX extensions that are not available for ARM and don't install on the ARM version of Visual Studio. In the Visual Studio Installer there is no option to select an architecture. What can I do to get the x86 version?

In short, you cannot. The underlying architecture must match that of the VS...

Well that can’t be true. Before there was a native version of Visual Studio for Windows on ARM, I ran the x86 version all the time. I fact, to this day the only available version of VS 2019 is x86 too.

You can run x86 apps on Windows on ARM through the integrated translation layer. It’s just a matter of the Visual Studio installer not giving me an option to install the x86 version.

What am I missing?

Apologies for the misleading statement - you are obviously correct regarding running the x86 version of VS on the ARM platform - you can leverage x86/x64 emulation. I was referring to the direct installation process.

I gather you should be able to create an offline installation (more at https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/visualstudio/install/create-an-offline-installation-of-visual-studio?view=vs-2022 ) - by default, the layout uses the x64 binaries

Alright I tried this and was able to install the x86 version of Visual Studio. Unfortunately, it does not launch though. It displays the following error upon launching:

Microsoft Visual Studio

Could not start visual studio due to an error.

System.IO.FileNotFoundException:

Could not find 'servicehub.config.json' in 'C:\Users\jakob\Desktop\x86\Common7\IDE' or its parents.

OK

I checked inside of C:\Users\jakob\Desktop\x86\Common7\IDE\ and servicehub.config.json does indeed not exist inside of there. I have then tried to repair Visual Studio which did not bring any change

Hello, do you have any errors or warnings during installing VS?

You can uninstall all previous versions of Visual Studio (x64, x86 or Arm64) and retry the installation.

By the way, it’s recommended to use the native Arm64 version of Visual Studio 2022 on Windows 11 Arm64.
