Windows 10 capacity issue

I purchased a new 500GB SSD. Right after installation of Windows 10, the C drive was using about 40~50 GB.

After installing a few tools, it started using about 20~30 GB more. At that time, the total usage of the folders on the C drive was around 75GB. Since I set hidden folders to be visible, the actual used size was 75GB.

However, after using the PC a few times, it unexpectedly showed that around 115GB was being used. The usage in the folders on the C drive still showed about 75GB.

Today, when I booted up the PC, it now shows that 144GB is being used. The usage in the folders on the C drive is still about 75GB.

Even after performing 'Disk Cleanup' on the C drive, nothing seems to be taking up space. Could the remaining 69GB be caused by the OS somehow acting up?

Such anomaly is often caused by hidden system files or reserved storage used by Windows.

Consider reducing System Restore point allocation. Windows automatically creates them and stores them as shadow copies.

If Hibernation is enabled, then disable that.

    Adjust size of Page file:

System Properties → Advanced → Performance Settings → Advanced → Virtual Memory → Change.

    Clear temporary files.

Open Storage Sense (Settings > System > Storage)

Check for large hidden system files.

Use TreeSize Free or WinDirStat to analyze disk space.

Note that compressed files (should) show up in blue. So there will be a difference between the size of those files and the amount of disk space that they actually occupy.

If you have a lot of files that compress easily that might account for the space difference.
