Upgrade paths
- Windows Server 2008 R2: Direct in-place upgrades to Windows Server 2022 are not supported. You must first upgrade to an intermediate version, such as Windows Server 2012 R2 or 2016, and then to 2022.
- Windows Server 2012 R2: In-place upgrades to Windows Server 2022 are supported if all prerequisites are met.
License Considerations
- MAK Licenses:
- MAK licenses are tied to a specific Windows Server version and edition. They cannot be used to activate newer versions like 2022 or 2025.
- You will need to acquire new licenses for the target Windows Server version. These licenses might be purchased outright or obtained through Software Assurance (SA) if applicable.
- Volume Licensing:
- If your licenses are under a Volume Licensing agreement with active SA, you may have upgrade rights to the latest Windows Server versions.
- Retail or OEM Licenses:
- Retail or OEM MAK licenses generally do not include rights to upgrade to newer versions.
