I am trying to delete backups for servers that no longer exist from a Recovery Services Vault. The Backup Management Server also no longer exists. I can't delete anything because i get the error message "A server with the same name is registered with the Recovery Services Vault under a different Backup Management Type. Contact Microsoft support to resolve this issue." I can't contact Microsoft Support as we don't have a relevant support agreement. Help please.

Thanks

@LeeJordan Thank you for contacting us on Microsoft Q&A platform. Happy to help!

As per the error message it seems your server got registered with incorrect backup management type which needs to be corrected from the backend. After the changes then you would be able to delete the server from recovery service vault.

Unfortunately, you have to open a support request with Azure Backup Team to get this corrected as you don't have a way to correct it from your end. Request you to please check and maybe open a free ticket with Azure support to get this fixed.

    Hi LeeJordan
Welcome to Microsoft Q&A!, Thanks for asking here!
To delete backups from a Recovery Services Vault in Azure, follow these steps if you see the error "A server with the same name is registered with the Recovery Services Vault under a different Backup Management Type."
    1.Sign into the azure portal.
2.Go to your Recovery Services Vault in the Azure portal.
3.select backup Infrastructure and protected servers to see the list of associated servers.
4.Select each listed server and choose to unregister or delete them.
5.Go to the Backup Items section in the vault, and make sure there are no remaining backups.
6.If there are, must stop the backup and delete the associated data.
7.Backup Infrastructure for any storage accounts still linked to the vault and remove them, even if they appear deleted.
8.Ensure that you have administrative rights to perform these actions.
9.Be careful, as this process will permanently delete all backup data in the vault.
