Remote Desktop slow on connection when Remote Gateway and Remote Desktop service are on the Same Server

I have one server configured both Remote Gateway and Remote Desktop service. If I connect to the remote desktop from outside, it takes a very long time on "Configuring remote session" before getting inside.

However, if I connect to other servers via the remote gateway, it connected in seconds. What's the reason for that?

    Hi NeilWang ,

    1. whether your networking connection on the RDGateway uses Internet Protocol Version4 or Internet Protocol Version6. If indeed, remove the IPV6 and try again.
You can check it with Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Network Connections -> Ethernet Propertities -> Networking

    2. please check the RDgateway server and RDSH version, you can enter "winver" in the windows search box to check.
    3. did you configure roaming profile ,UPD ,fslogix in your rds environment?
so when one user remote logon RDgateway, the user profile will attach RDgateway server.
when you use local account of RDgateway server to remote access RDgateway server ,will the same issue happen ?

please share testing results for better solution to this problem.

    Hi Grace,

Thanks for your help. Here're my results:

    1. not improving
    2. windows 2019 v1809 build 17763.1757
    3. I'm using user profile disks and store vhds in a separate partition. If I switch off that option, will user data be migrated automatically?

    Hi Grace,

I don't know what I have done, however, I found I remedy this issue after I only allow connections from Network Level Authentication enabled computers. Even if I disable that option later again, the slow connection symptom is gone.

But anyway I think NLA is compatible with most of the clients even back in the XP ages, right?
