You neglected to mention your suggestion will wipe out the Windows Update history (and maybe a few other things).

If you feel your instructions are "safe" and it haven't' already you might want to follow your own advice and check your Windows Update history when complete.

Do come back and report your findings.

Anyone following the troubleshooter will encounter a problem at this juncture (this step is poorly executed):

    Forward your complaint to Microsoft.

    Hello,

Please run Windows Update troubleshooter from Control Panel > Troubleshooting > View all. See if it helps you.

If that doesn't work, try this:

Open administrative Command Prompt and type following commands one-by-one followed by Enter key.

    net stop wuauserv

    net stop cryptSvc

    net stop bits

    net stop msiserver

    Ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

    Ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old

    net start wuauserv

    net start cryptSvc

    net start bits

    net start msiserver

Close Command Prompt and see if Windows Updates works then.

Let us know if this helps!
