Based on your descriptions, I may firstly need more detailed information about your environment:
- What did you mean "an external VM"? Is this VM in your cluster or you mean this VM is connected with an external network?
2) How did you configure your VM? You use our Hyper-V or Vmware?
3) How many nodes (hosts) you have in your cluster? I guess it is a two node cluster using iSCSi?
4) "if host02 becomes inaccessible host01 hangs", does this situation refer to that your cluster is crashed? In other words, your host02 drops while because host01 hangs so host02 cannot failover to host01? If so, then how and where you configure your clustered disk? I may need more information before I can help you figure out some appropriate plans.
5) You need to identify whether you use active-active mode if you only have two nodes in your cluster. If so, you may have to pay more attention about the size of the file that needs backuping, since active-active mode occupies double space on your nodes.
