Requesting virus scan - Word 2002

Question

I have AVG Free 8.0 (bad upgrade!) and MS Word 2002. Every time that I open any Word document, there is a long delay, and a message at the bottom of the file says "requesting virus scan." I have already deleted the infamous avgoff2k.dll file from the Program files/grisoft avg free folder, and that had no effect. I can't access any options in AVG that might work.

The virus scan message comes not from Word but from linked anti-virus software. It may be necessary to unregister the calling DLL by running the following command line from Windows > Start > Run

regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgoff2k.dll"

If there are any old WLL add-ins in the Startup folders they will trigger this message even

if the user doesn't have any type of virus scanner enabled. Apparently, MS is using the virus scanning engine to check for macros in WLL files and as a result it triggers the message. Note other than checking for macros it isn't  actually performing a virus scan....One add-in that used a WLL is EndNote." So you might check your Word and Office Startup folders for .wll files. 

Isn't it time you updated this ancient AVG application?

You will have to contact your respective security vendor to unblock scanning for the Word program.

As I said, I no longer have the avgoff2k.dll file, so obviously, the command line that you offered won't run.

As far as updating the "ancient AVG" application goes, the 8.0 version caused so many problems, that I'm not going to update AVG again. In fact, one of the problems is that it refuses to update.

However, I will check for .wll files and let you know if that helps.
