Teams Calling

In running a POC, last year I was easily able to assign a phone number to a user account in Teams and were able to use dialling externally (PSTN) and conference numbers (though this was assigned via the legacy SfB Admin). After a short while we un-assigned the numbers after the test.

We then moved from Islands mode on Teams to full Teams Only co-existence mode. I'm now about to trial the calling again, but struggling as I can't assign a number. I am now wondering: Has a recent change occurred meaning that I now have to do things differently (by purchasing the add-on calling plan) Or am I looking in the wrong place to assign the number?

We are using Microsoft E5 licences and we just want to test the calling (PTSN) within Teams again. There are numbers available. I'm just wondering how I did it so easily before and now it appears to be so complicated!

cheers

    Hi wellytoad,

In Islands mode, PSTN voice services are handled by Skype for Business. In this mode, Phone System is not supported in Teams.

However, in Teams Only mode, user has access to all the capabilities in Teams. Phone System can be used in Teams now. In this scenario, Phone System can be connected to the PSTN in one of the two ways:

    • Purchase a Microsoft Calling Plan (domestic or domestic and international). For more information, see Phone System and Calling Plans.
    • Use your existing telephony infrastructure for on-premises PSTN connectivity. For your Teams users, you can connect your on-premises telephony infrastructure to Phone System by using Direct Routing. For more information, see Phone System Direct Routing.

    Hi wellytoad,

This is by design. As you understand, it has no use when in Teams only mode.

Thanks for your feedback. It is a good idea to remove this legacy portal when in Teams only mode.

Thanks. one more question as I can't find a clear answer.

When in "Teams only" mode, does changing anything at all in the Legacy Skype for Business Admin centre have an affect on users or Teams settings? If so, what is it still used for?
