The 'tab' button

After I press the 'tab' button the cursor goes different distances after each word. Sometimes it jumps only one space, sometimes it goes several spaces and so the line is not symmetrical. I tried it several times in new documents and it still does it. What can I do?

We suggest that you check this link and refer to the topic below Set tabs on the ruler to know more information on how you can set tab stops on your Word app.

Like Suzanne and Ma. Lau have said the default tabs are half an inch apart. So depending on the width of your text you may land on an intermediate tab. The best thing to do would be to set your own tabs one for each column.

Unless you have set manual tab stops, Word uses the automatic tab stops inserted at half-inch intervals (or another interval you can specify), so Tab advances not a specific number of spaces, but to the next tab stop. For more, see http://wordfaqs.ssbarnhill.com/SettingTabs.htm

    Hello Juraj,

If you set manual tab stops, the default tab stops are interrupted by the manual tab stops that you set. Manual tab stops that are set on the ruler override the default tab stop settings. Remember that default tab stops are set at every half inch. Before we proceed, may we know the following:

    • When did the issue first occur?
    • Are you getting any error or messages?
    • What is the current build and version of your Word app?
    • Does the issue occur with Word app only? Have you tried to use other Windows and Office application such as PowerPoint, OneNote, WordPad or Notepad to check if you will encounter the same behavior?
    • Did you make any recent changes to your device or application settings before the error occurs?

Do come back with the required information and we would be glad to assist you.
