Hi everybody,

I hope that someone can tell me how to change the cross reference names? I am adding figures in my document in Dutch, but suddenly it says figure. I want that to change in to the Dutch word figuur. I discovered that this issue is not only appears in this document. It also appears in templates. So in the heart of the system so it seems.

I am using Microsoft Word for Mac version 16.36.

In the affected document, select all the text (Ctrl+A) and then display the Language dialog box (Review > Language > Set Proofing Language). Re-apply Dutch (even if it already appears to be selected) and click OK. (Do NOT click Set as Default, because this is not an attempt to change the default language.)

See the example below (with other combinations of language, but the general idea is still the same).

If Stefan's response solves your problem please mark it as an Answer.

If not, you may want to look at my article: Proofing Language Keeps Changing - Solutions - How can I keep my proofing language from changing

The key piece of information is that the proofing language is set at the character level and can come into a document with pasted text. The article includes macros which can be adapted to Dutch.

    Hi Stefan,

I nearly finished my document and I had no problems. If I selected "figuur" in de dialogue box, I had the possibility to select one of my figures so I could create the right cross reference. That all changed suddenly. I remember adding a second screen enabling me to scroll through the document to create an overview for myself. Now the option "figuur" disappeared, and has been replaced by "figure".

I have indeed the feeling I have to change something in the heart of Word, something with selecting Dutch language. But without any luck so far. I checked the templates, they are all set in Dutch as standard, but still, no option to choose "figuur" instead of "figure". What am I doing wrong?

Is this problem just in the Cross-reference dialog box?

If "Figuur" is missing in the Caption dialog box as well, then there is almost certainly an issue with the language formatting applied to text.
