Sorry to say, Windows explorer continually crashes. This has been going on for many, many years. I have cleared all windows explorer caches, but it still crashes.

Explorer crashing this often, I have found bulletproof ways to make it crash. Right click on any folder/drive on the left, and crash.

Terrible part is, Explorer crashes, that means reload of all desktops, reset of all screens, and everything attached to explorer, simply stops. (File transfers) You have to start from the beginning and hope files are not corrupted. Files are often corrupted.

I am on latest Win 11 pro build (XP explorer crashed, Win 10 Crashed, etc)

SFC /scan now reports fine

DISM repair, reports nothing wrong.

Windows update as of Oct 30th, 2025 is up to date.

Explorer just crashed again.

Are there recommended file managers other than Windows Explorer ? Its been years of Windows doing this, and very tired of it.

Any advice ?

Cheers!

Thanks. Been using xplorer and total commander for years. They are stable. The issue really is as an IT manager of multiple systems. Everyone experiences the Explorer crashes. I would really hate to have to replace all explorer file manager on thousands of machines. As everyone is aware, asking end users to change their work flow, is a huge problem.

These are out of the box fresh installs. Win 11 pro. Mind you these explorer crashes have been on my plate for 20 Plus years. Curious if Microsoft ever intends to fix it.

    Many thanks.

    Dear Robin Ganderton,

Given that SFC and DISM scans return clean results and you're fully updated, the issue may stem from third-party shell extensions that integrate into the right-click context menu. These are common culprits in cases like yours.

    Here’s what we recommend:

    1. Perform a Clean Boot This helps isolate third-party services that may be interfering with Explorer. Instructions: How to perform a clean boot in Windows
    2. Use ShellExView to Disable Context Menu Handlers Download ShellExView Sort by “Type” and focus on Context Menu items Disable non-Microsoft entries one by one or in groups, then test Explorer stability This tool is safe and widely used for diagnosing right-click crashes
    3. Check for Third-Party Customization Tools If you’re using tools like ExplorerPatcher, StartAllBack, or similar, try uninstalling them. These can conflict with Explorer’s rendering and stability.

If you’re looking for a more stable or feature-rich alternative to File Explorer, here are a few widely used options:

    File Manager Key Features
Total Commander Dual-pane interface, FTP support, plugin ecosystem
    -------- --------
Total Commander Dual-pane interface, FTP support, plugin ecosystem
Directory Opus Highly customizable UI, scripting, metadata editing
FreeCommander Lightweight, tabbed interface, portable version available
XYplorer Tabbed browsing, scripting, portable, frequent updates

These tools are independent of Windows Explorer and may offer a more stable experience for your workflow.
