I accidentally removed my Owner role from my subscription. I am the original subscription creator using a personal Microsoft account. I no longer have permission to create resource groups or view billing. Please restore Owner access to my account.

    Hello Kiran,

We understand you lose your Owner role and not have access to manage your subscription. When the Owner role is removed, you lose RBAC permissions to manage resources. However, billing and subscription-level access is controlled by the Account Administrator and Microsoft Entra ID roles. Recovery depends on whether:

    • You still have Account Administrator rights (billing scope).
    • You have Global Administrator in the associated Microsoft Entra tenant.

If you still have Account Administrator access:

    • Sign in to https://portal.azure.com with the same Microsoft account.
    • Go to Cost Management + Billing > Properties.
    • Confirm you are listed as Account Administrator.
    • If yes, navigate to Subscriptions > Access control (IAM).
    • Use Elevate access (requires Global Admin) or assign yourself Owner again.

If you have Global Administrator in Entra ID:

    • Sign in to https://entra.microsoft.com.
    • Go to Azure Active Directory > Properties > Access management for Azure resources.
    • Enable Global Admin can manage all Azure subscriptions and management groups.
    • Return to Subscriptions > Access control (IAM) and add yourself as Owner.

If you are the only user and no admin exists, The best course of action would be to submit a support request through the Azure portal.

Here are the steps to create the support ticket:

    • Go to Azure portal > Search for Help + Support or https://portal.azure.com/#view/Microsoft_Azure_Support/HelpAndSupportBlade/~/overview
    • Search for Help + Support > click on Create a Support Request
    • On right-side panel, Enter Subscription and click Go > select the issue with "Subscription Management" > select your Subscription then click Next.
    • Now click on the Create support request on top of the panel. User's image
    • Select the Issue type as Subscription Management and, select the summary, problem type and problem subtype as below > click on the Next__.__ User's image
    • Do not click on any recommendation solution, instead click on the Return to support request then click Next. retun AP
    • Fill alle the required information and provide the clear description of you issue and click Next
    • Review and create as submit the support request
    • You should receive an automated email within a few minutes and then be contacted by support team.

If you have accidentally removed your Owner role from your Azure subscription and no longer have permission to manage resources or view billing, you will need to regain access through another user who has the Owner role or the appropriate permissions.

Here are the steps you can take:

    1. Contact another Owner: If there are other users with the Owner role on the subscription, reach out to them and request that they restore your access.
    2. Check for Billing Account Owners: If you are the original creator of the subscription, there might be a billing account owner who can help you regain access. They can assign the Owner role back to you.
    3. Accept Billing Ownership: If the original billing account owner has left the organization, Azure may send an email to other billing account owners and subscription owners, allowing them to accept billing ownership of the subscription. You can check for such notifications.
    4. Contact Azure Support: If you cannot resolve the issue through other users, consider contacting Azure support for assistance in restoring your access.

Unfortunately, if there are no other users with the Owner role, and you cannot regain access through support, you may need to create a new subscription using a different account.
