Follow these steps to get Gmail working again in classic Outlook and know when to contact support.
- Confirm IMAP is enabled in Gmail
- In a browser, go to Gmail and sign in.
- Select the gear icon > Settings.
- Go to Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
- Under IMAP access, make sure Enable IMAP is selected.
- Select Save Changes.
- Fix Outlook’s connection to Gmail (Microsoft apps & services access)
If Outlook previously connected but now fails with IMAP/auth errors, reset the Microsoft access grant:
- Close Outlook.
- In a browser, sign in to your Google account on Google.com.
- Select your profile picture > Manage your Google Account.
- In the left menu, select Security.
- Scroll to Your connections to third-party apps & services and select Microsoft apps & services.
- Under Access you've given to Microsoft apps & services, select Remove all access and confirm.
- Clear old Google IMAP credentials from Windows
- Open Credential Manager from the Windows Start menu (on some systems via Control Panel > Credential Manager).
- Select Windows Credentials.
- Under Generic Credentials, find entries starting with MicrosoftOffice16_Data:OAUTH2.
- Expand each and hover over the name until the full name shows tp_google_imap_oauth2.
- Select Remove for each Gmail-related MicrosoftOffice16_Data:OAUTH2 entry (there are typically two per Gmail account).
- Re-add the Gmail account in classic Outlook
- Start Outlook.
- Add the Gmail account again.
- When the Google sign-in window opens in the browser, sign in and, on the permissions screen, ensure the option allowing Microsoft apps & services to “Read, compose, send, and permanently delete all your email from Gmail” is checked.
- Complete the sign-in.
- If Outlook shows “browser or app may not be secure” or similar
Ensure Outlook is updated to a build that includes the Gmail sign-in fix:
- In Outlook, go to File > Office Account > Update Options > Update Now.
- The fix is available starting with Current Channel Version 2404 (Build 17531.10000) and later, and other listed channels.
- After updating, retry adding the Gmail account.
- When to contact Microsoft support
Contact Microsoft support if, after completing all steps above, Outlook still cannot add the Gmail account or continues to show IMAP/authorization errors. Provide:
- Exact Outlook version/build.
- Exact error text when adding the account.
- Confirmation that IMAP is enabled in Gmail and that Microsoft apps & services access was removed and re-granted.
