My Minecraft Java Edition multiplayer button is greyed out and shows "Multiplayer is disabled. Please check your Microsoft account settings

I have already tried the following:

  • Reinstalled Minecraft Launcher
  • Logged out and back in

However, the multiplayer is still disabled. I am unable to change the privacy settings on the Xbox settings page as it says I don't have permission, even though I am the organizer in my Microsoft Family group with no child accounts linked.

Please help me resolve this issue.

Also I am using Mac to play minecraft

    Hello Jh B,

The Q&A Assist's steps apply if your account was originally created as a child account.

However, you mentioned you're the organizer with no child accounts linked. If you're the organizer with no child accounts linked and multiplayer is still disabled, your account may be incorrectly flagged, and the privacy settings fix won't work on your end.

In that case, you need to contact Microsoft Support directly at https://support.microsoft.com/home/contact and request a manual review to correct the account classification, with a government-issued ID ready to verify your age.

The Microsoft account is still being treated as a child account, so Minecraft Java multiplayer is blocked at the account level even though Xbox privacy shows “Allow” and the launcher was reinstalled.

    Key points from the context:

    • Child accounts cannot remove or bypass family/online restrictions by changing their date of birth after the fact. Changing the birth date to an adult age (for example, 2003) does not convert an existing child account into an adult account.
    • This is by design to prevent children from changing their age to escape family restrictions. The account must actually reach the legal adult age (18 or the local adult age) based on the original birth date stored for the account.
    • Until that happens, only a parent/guardian (family organizer who originally granted consent) can change privacy/online safety settings and app/game access for that account.

What this means for the scenario:

    1. The Microsoft account is still flagged as a child account internally, regardless of the updated date of birth.
    2. Because of that, online multiplayer and cross‑network play can be blocked by default for safety reasons.
    3. The account itself cannot fully manage its own Xbox privacy settings or remove restrictions, which is why the Xbox settings page reports that there is no permission to change them, even if the account appears as an organizer in the current family group.
    4. These restrictions apply across platforms (including Mac) because Minecraft Java multiplayer uses the same Microsoft/Xbox account safety model.

Available options based on the context:

    • If there is a parent/guardian account that originally granted consent for this Microsoft account, that adult must:
      • Sign in to the Microsoft account family/child management pages and adjust the child’s privacy/online safety settings and app/game permissions, including multiplayer and third‑party app/game access.
    • If the account was created as a child account and there is no way to access or identify the original consenting adult account, the restrictions cannot be removed by the child account itself. The account must reach the age of majority (18 or the local adult age) according to the original birth date stored by Microsoft before it is treated as an adult account and allowed to leave the family group and manage its own settings.

Because the context explicitly states that a child account cannot be converted to an adult account by editing the birth date, there is no supported way in the documentation to immediately unlock multiplayer on this specific Microsoft account if it is still under the child/underage flag. The only supported paths are:

    • Have the original parent/guardian account adjust permissions, or
    • Wait until the account automatically becomes an adult account based on the original birth date.
