I missed the notification to pull the whiteboard files off the app before it closed. Is there a chance to still do this or reopen the app

The retired standalone Whiteboard app cannot be reopened, but a work or school account may still access OneDrive-backed boards through Whiteboard on the web, Microsoft Teams, or OneDrive.

If this is a work or school account

    1. Sign in to Whiteboard on the web or open Microsoft Teams → Apps → Whiteboard, using the same account previously used in the standalone app.
    2. Check the Whiteboard gallery for the boards.
    3. Also check Microsoft 365 → OneDrive → My files → Whiteboards for .whiteboard files. OneDrive-backed boards remain available after the standalone app’s retirement.^1^
    4. If the files belong to a former or inaccessible organizational account, contact the Microsoft 365 administrator. An administrator can access that user’s OneDrive and move the Whiteboard files to an active user’s OneDrive.^2^

If these were older Azure-based boards

The deadline changes the available options:

    • Migration to OneDrive ended September 25, 2026.
    • Unmigrated Azure boards remained viewable and exportable only until October 16, 2026.
    • On October 16, remaining Azure-based boards were permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.^3^

A board successfully migrated earlier might have had an approximately 90-day Azure restoration window, but restoration was not available beyond October 16, 2026. Therefore, that route is now closed.^4^

If this is a personal Microsoft account

The Windows, iOS, and Android standalone apps retired on October 16, 2026; an installed app now displays the retirement notice instead of opening its gallery or content.^1^

Microsoft’s published guidance does not provide a post-retirement recovery procedure for personal-account boards that were only accessible through the retired app. Personal-account boards are not available through the documented work-or-school OneDrive recovery path.^5^

If the same account shows no boards in any currently available Whiteboard experience, the remaining option is to contact Microsoft Support and ask specifically whether the account’s Whiteboard data still exists server-side. Reinstalling the retired application will not restore access.
