Hello,
I am facing a problem with assigning a custom domain to a Static Web App.
I initially created an app and added a custom domain like app.mydomain.com and generated a TXT verification code.
Afterwards, the domain vas in a verifying state, at which point I clicked on Set default in the list of domains.
Some time passed and the domain disappeared from the list.
Trying to add it again failed.
I deleted the Static Web App and created a new one.
Now I cannot add the same custom domain with a domainName is invalid error.
Inspecting the response reveals Request Envelope is invalid. Please ensure the custom domain is not linked to another site., even though the old site has been deleted for two days.

@Ryan Hill it would be good to know if there is any way to unblock the domain as it is currently unusable.

Hey Ryan, I have this exact problem. It seems to be that a deleted static web app (3 months ago) is the culprit, is there anything that I can do to unblock the domain?

Config has accept "*.domain" but when I receive "Request Envelope is invalid. Please ensure the custom domain is provided and well-formed."
What is the real meaning of this?
@Andre Mesquita that message means the custom domain has an invalid character like _. A dots(.) and hyphens(-) are valid as long as they're not used at the beginning or end of the name. If you don't have a hyphen, then it may be a special character that isn't supported.
No. My customer's domain is "active.co.mz".
co.mz isn't a supported top level domain. I'm thinking that's the issue.
I do not understand it.
I can designate a TXT but not a CNAME?
We decided that we will host on another service, but as a test, I successfully configured it with the domain that is not supported but the real limitation is that it does not allow wildcards.
I'm documenting this to help other people who may experience this issue.
@Andre Mesquita I've followed up with the product group and static web apps does not support wildcard custom domain binding.

I noticed that no wildcard is not accepted.
I actually had no intention of using wildcards, my intention was that I could establish the root domain and the canonical www, only.
But the root domain is also not accepted, perhaps due to the limitation of "supported domain extensions". If I use "active.co.mz", the form logic identifies active as a sub-domain and, the extension, as a domain.
It turned out that I had assigned the custom hostname to a different app by accident. This means that even deleting the old static web app did not release the custom domain.
I removed the custom domain from the correct app and managed to assign it to the correct one.
Afterwards I verified using CNAME - works even for subdomains.
All the credit goes to @Ryan Hill who did an amazing job discovering this misconfiguration!

HI, I have this exact issue. Three days ago (with no changes - no deployments), my site started getting 404s from Azure. I'm using another DNS provider (again, no changes there). I tried to set up the custom DNS, but I'm getting the same error:
Could not add custom domain. Please ensure the custom domain is not linked to another app or that a previous implementation is not still being cleaned up.
@Ryan Hill, sorry to link you directly, but I'm getting nowhere with this, and no-one from support is getting in touch.
