Domain netbios rename of empty root domain

Question

We have a forest with an empty root domain and a child domain containing users, exchange,...

We would like to change the netbios name of the root domain. Is it supported? As this domain doesn't have any service bound to it , I suppose that the answer is yes.

Hi Jean,

Yes it is supported but I will suggest you carry out detailed process and mitigate any issues if something goes wrong, backups, dependencies etc.

Hello there,

Netbios name can't be changed with any version of windows AD and it default assigned when AD is created.

When you create a new domain during the Active Directory installation procedure, the system provides a default NetBIOS domain name that matches the leftmost label in the DNS domain name up to the first 15 bytes (NetBIOS names have a limit of 15 bytes). You can change this name during the procedure, but you cannot change it thereafter. When you name a stand-alone server or workstation computer, you provide a computer name that is used as the NetBIOS name and is concatenated with the domain name to form the full computer name.
