security through identification

I am sure this is going to be linked to from all the big news sites today, but I am posting it as well because I feel it is important. Bruce Schneier has written an article on why ID checks create only the illusion of security. I have read Bruce's book on cryptography and I have been a fan of his writing ever since. It is my opinion that what he says in this article is 100% correct.

In other authors-I-respect-related news, William Gibson is talking on campus today and I am looking forward to seeing him again. I read his most recent book, and I enjoyed it. It did seem a bit light though.
