Visual Studio Image Library

A customer from Las Vegas DevConnections asks:

It seems like, but I may be mistaken, that you said something about posting some new set of toolbar icons on your blog? Was I in a Vegas-induced stupor or did you really say that?

Yes, I really, really did - however I totally forgot to link to it.  Aaron talks about the library here. ...and Soma talks about how the new image library came to be

Instructions for finding the image library can be found here:

To install the Visual Studio 2005 Image Library
Locate the file VS2005ImageLibrary.zip. This file is normally installed in \...\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\VS2005ImageLibrary\.

  1. Right-click VS2005ImageLibrary.zip and click Extract All.
  2. The Extraction Wizard appears.
  3. Follow the directions in the wizard to extract the images.

It looks like, this is something you'll need the full Visual Studio install for - the zip file does not install with the Express editions of Visual Studio.

    Cool stuff!

The only downside is that in about a year, Vista will usher in a new set of icons/images. It would be great if VS 2005 users could get a free download of a "Vista refresh" image library once Vista ships.

That's a great suggestion - I'd send it through product feedback:

I don't mean to be too picky, but in order to be useful, an icon collection has to come in various sizes. This is not the case with the VS2005 art, so really, it is not as useful as it could otherwise be.

Hmm, I am not sure I agree with your assessment - I just opened up blankcd.ico and it has lots of image sizes in it. You can verify this by opening the icon in Visual Studio, selecting Image->Current Icon Image Types.

Hi All - I'm the program manager who owns the Image Library. PatriotB and tzagotta - please do submit your feedback on the Image Library to the MSDN Product Feedback Center, and get your colleagues to vote on it, too. The more demand we can point at, the more leverage we'll have to get more stuff in there.

tzagotta - in regard to your comment, I agree completely but, unfortunately, 16x16px is the only size in which we have a lot of these icons.

Also, if you have any feedback you'd like to send me privately, feel free to contact me at abreth [at] micro[nospam]soft.com, and remove the [nospam].

    Thanks!
    Aaron
