Can I move work items assigned to one user to another using TFSWitDisplayNames tool?
Short answer is - no.
This post is the result of a question from one of our customers who had the following scenario:
1. They have an external developer with a domain account (domain\JohnDoeExternal)
2. The developer gets hired by the company, so they create another account for this user (domain\JohnDoe)
3. They wanted to move work items assigned to JohnDoeExternal to JohnDoe including fields like 'Authorized As'
'Authorized As' is a special field and works differently than the other "person" fields such as 'Assigned To'. In this scenario, the new account will be treated as a different user and has a different security identifier. The work items will just need to be assigned to the new user. You can use Microsoft Office Excel to bulk assign all the work items to the new account.
TFSWitDisplayNames tool was designed to address display name changes in Active Directory that do not propagate completely throughout TFS in some scenarios.
Please look at our KB 932717 article for a detailed description of TFSWitDisplayNames tool, scenarios that are addressed and how to get a copy of the tool.
