Where did my Publisher template go?

Say you're working in Publisher 2007 and just created a beautiful template. You saved it . . . or so you thought . . . but it's not are showing up in the Recent Publications list nor in the My Templates catalog.

What happened?
Only publications, and not templates, are usually displayed in the Recent Publications list. The My Templates catalog shows templates that are saved to the default template location:

  • Windows XP: Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\user name\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates folder
  • Vista: Look in the C:\Users\user name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates folder

If your templates are not listed in My Templates, they may not currently be saved in the default location.

How do I fix this?
If a template has been saved to a location other than the default location, open the template and save it to the default location, or move or copy the template to the default location. After the template is available at the default location, you can quickly open it by clicking New on the File menu, and then clicking My Templates.

What is the current default template location on my computer?
Here's how to find it:

  1. Create a new test publication.
  2. On the File menu, click Save As.
  3. In the Save as type list, click Publisher Template.
  4. Make a note of the location of the highlighted folder in the list. This folder is the default template location where Publisher looks for templates.
