Toyota spreads the joys of "car life" with cloud-based web development and content management

After evaluating offerings from several companies, Toyota chose Windows Azure Infrastructure Services for its development environment and the Microsoft SharePoint 2013 web application and content management solution. Toyota worked with Microsoft Services to plan and build the new site using Microsoft Visual Studio 2012, and the redesigned GAZOO.com was launched on May 30, 2013.

Upgrade learning roadmap–revisited

Not long ago, we launched a set of Learning Roadmaps for SharePoint 2013. It seems like they’re going over fairly well, but we wanted to try out a more visual, less formal version of the roadmap content type and see what you think. I’ve reworked the Upgrade roadmap to include visuals as landmarks for each section and a friendlier tone throughout. Would love to hear what you think about this approach.

Updates to search ranking models in SharePoint Server 2013

If you use SharePoint Server 2013, the Cumulative Update package published in August contains an updated and expanded set of ranking models for search. Details of the contents of the update, including download information can be found here: https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2817616. If you use SharePoint Online, you will have access to these ranking models automatically when the service is updated.

Deploying Workflow Manager 1.0 for Sharepoint 2013 the right way

There’s not a lot of high quality documentation for Workflow Manager 1.0. What exists is generally accurate, however it’s the key missing information and lack of detail which presents challenges in the field. Spence Harbar, a SharePoint MCM and MCP has put together a cracking guide on how it should be done. The objective is not to cover background conceptual or architectural aspects of Workflow Manager or Service Bus specifically, as these are well covered already elsewhere. Rather the objective is to provide clear and accurate explanation along with repeatable deployment and configuration details for common scenarios faced by the SharePoint practitioner.

Easy MySQL Backups and Restores Using phpMyAdmin

Thanks to the Web Platform Installer deploying a site with Wordpress and MySQL is a breeze. There are a few tools to maintain your MySQL databases and MySQL Workbench is an obvious choice. However if you are working remotely and only have access to a web browser then a free tool called phpMyAdmin is great solution.

Fine tuning Dynamic Worker-Process Page-out on IIS 8.5

With the release of Windows 2012 R2, IIS now offers the option of configuring sites to suspend after they have been idle for a while (in addition to the option of terminate, which existed since IIS 7). We have discussed this feature in the past both in this blog, and during our TechEd North America presentation. This time, though, we are going to take a look into fine-tuning the settings for optimal performance.

Mitigating SQL Injection Attacks in IIS 7.5

It is surprising with all the advances in Internet technologies that there is still a lot of old school code being used and reused. Because of that, there are some topics that will be around for many years to come.

IIS compression overrides the VARY header

It was recently discovered by one of our customers, 51Degrees, that IIS has an issue where if content compression and caching are both enabled, IIS will overwrite the VARY header. When this happens, this affects caching behavior, making it ineffective. This behavior will be addressed in a future version of IIS, but until then, 51Degrees have developed a work-around for this. The workaround entails creating two custom modules for IIS, which are able to store and recover the value of the VARY header after it gets overwritten.

James from 51Degrees wrote a detailed guide for this on the company blog, so it might be useful for others as well (as well as anyone who needs to develop custom modules for IIS).
