When will ASP.NET 8 be available for use on App Services, even as a preview please?

We've been using 8 for a while in VS2022 Preview and need to start testing in a live environment (away from VM's!).

Now App Service already supports ASP.NET Core 8.0 (Version 8.0.0-preview-4-23260-4), you can experience it in the following way.

We followed the instructions today and ensured that both x86 and x64 versions were in. We also saw this reflected on the extensions blade:

However when we publish the app (via VS Publish or DevOps) the web app shows the following error:

HTTP Error 500.31 - Failed to load ASP.NET Core runtime

Is there anything else that needs to be done?

I'm not sure if its relevant but the .Net version drop down list still only shows .NET 6/7.

Hello @David,

For this specific error, you can check the Application Crash logs and in Application Event Logs Diagnose and solve problems. If it still not works, you can create azure support ticket and let Support Engineer help you.

Hi Jason,

I am also experiencing the same as @David, I following the exact steps as above. Created a .net 8 api using Visual studio minimal api. Made no changes to the code but did test it ran locally. Then published by pulling down the publish profile from the app service. I did change the Deployment mode to be self contained and Target Runtime to be win-x64. I did test win-x86 as well. Before making changes I tried Framework-dependant and Portable.

Hope this is enough info.

Can you please provide an exact step-by-step for this within app services? I checked the logs blade and also streaming logs, but saw nothing more than the error that appears in the browser (500.31).

We tried to open a support ticket via the Error 5xx path but the steps only lead to "suggestion solutions" that link to external pages we've already read. There is no option to actually open the ticket after all the searching and reading.

This does not work, the app service terminal still reports dotnet 7 is installed and not 8

Hi @David , like Jason mentioned App Service support for ASP.NET Core 8.0 is currently in preview so issues are definitely expected. There is no official date to share of when .NET 8 should be accessible on azure app service by the end of this month. Is there any update on this? The extensions now show the new .NET 8.0 preview 7 but they don't seem to do anything

The dotnet --info command in the console doesn't show any 8.0 versions.

Same problem here. Installed the Preview 7 extension on a few app services and dotnet --info still only lists <= .NET 7

Hi Grace, just curious if there's any updates on this? The last update said it's coming soon, that was almost a month ago. I have installed the .Net 8.0 RC1 run times on my app service, but am not seeing any way to actually use it. Thank you!

There is no official date. There will need to be a release candidate first. If we look at .net 7, azure support came in October a month before the final release.

Are you sure that .NET 8.0 is installed? I tried updating ~15 hours ago to .NET 8 but .NET 8 is not installed as SDK on my Azure App Service.

Edit: Up until 2 hours, only 8.0.0.rc-2.23479.6 was installed. If your App Service Plan is stuck loading and the underlying SDK changed, you need to restart the App Service. I just tried browsing it, but a restart was required.

Right now, it's 8.0.100-rc.2.23502.2

We've selected .NET 8 (LTS) in our App Service (Windows) and restarted the App Service in the Azure Portal, restarted the App Service in Kudu and redeployed the app using Azure DevOps but the console is still saying that the latest runtime installed is .NET 7.0.13.

Any idea what we're doing wrong?

As far as I've experienced, it should be

WebApps:

Site config on Windows:

WindowsFxVersion: "dotnet:8"

NetFrameworkVersion: "v8.0"

Metadata.CURRENT_STACK = "dotnet"

Site config on Linux:

LinuxFxVersion: "dotnetcore:8.0"

Some of these values can be found via running for windows or linux:

az webapp list-runtimes --os windows|linux

The CURRENT_STACK config is not documented anywhere. I only got it from StackOverflow posts. It seems to have been varying between "dotnetcore" and "dotnet" over time. It haven't found a way of setting it via the az cli - only via bicep/arm (or pulumi/terraform).

'Early access' sounds like a euphemism for 'broken'.
And net8 isn't an option in deployment pipelines.
Any idea when it migt be fixed and released?

@Richard Barraclough There is a '.NET Version' task that you can add to your pipeline that allows you to specify the version. If you set this to 8.0.x, it will use a newer version of MSBuild which supports .NET 8.

Hi, just checking if .net 8 for App Service is out of Early Access?

If I create a new web app the runtime stack dropdown still says ".net 8 (lts) (Early Access)"

But if I go to modify an existing web app the drop down says ".net 8 (lts)"
