Cannot rename channel in MS Teams due to an error

2024-06-12T20:11:09.25+00:00

Hello, I am not able to change the name of my channel in MS Teams due to a bug.

I start editing the channel, change the title, hit Save button, but an error message "We ran into a problem editing your channel" appears and the title does not change.

error popup

The same is happening for my colleagues as well, so it's not a problem on my machine only. The issue persists for several months already, is there any estimated fix date? Or is there any workaround?

Thank you

Hi, there are a couple of things you can try to fix the error message when renaming a channel in Microsoft Teams:

    1. Temporary Glitch:

    Here's what you can do:

Wait and Retry: Try waiting for a few hours or even a day and then attempt renaming the channel again. The issue might have resolved itself on the server-side.

Restart Teams: Close Microsoft Teams completely and then relaunch it. This can help clear any temporary cache or data that might be causing the issue.

Restart Your Device: In some cases, restarting your computer can also help resolve temporary glitches with applications.

    2. Check Permissions:

Make sure you have the necessary permissions to edit the channel. Channel owners and team owners can rename channels.

    3. Clear Teams Cache:

Corrupted cache data within Teams can sometimes cause issues. Here's how to clear the Teams cache (This process differs depending on your operating system):

Windows: Close Teams. Press Windows Key + R, type %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams, and press Enter. Delete all the files and folders in this folder. Restart your computer and relaunch Teams.

Mac: Close Teams. Go to Finder > Go (hold Option key) > Library > Application Support > Microsoft > Teams. Delete the contents of the Caches folder. Relaunch Teams.

    4. Try Web App:

If the desktop app is causing issues, try renaming the channel using the Microsoft Teams web app (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-teams/log-in).

Hi @Lucie Lavičková (Třísková) | Tesena

    1. Please check permissions: Confirm that you have the required permissions to create a channel in your team. Ask the team owner to go to More options (…) > Manage team > Settings > Member permissions and make sure the option to "Allow members to create and update channels" is selected. User's image
    2. Please try the web version: If you are using the Teams desktop or mobile app, consider using the web version: Microsoft Teams Web.
    3. Admin action: Please ask your admin to log in to the Teams admin center and make sure member edit permissions for the channel are turned on. User's image

Thanks for your understanding and support.
