As we understand that, you would like to restore a on-prem database instance and Azure SQL database without recreating azure data sync group as azure data sync already exists.
How to restore on-prem and azure sql database that are part Azure data sync group?
Point 1: You can restore on-prem database to a new server but make sure that restored new database name should be same as original database name using your standard restore method. To restore the Azure SQL Database to a new database, you can use Azure portal but make sure that, restore the database with the same name as the original database.
We would suggest you to restore the Azure SQL database with Point-in-Time Restore feature.
When Azure sql database which is part of azure data sync group is restored, the sync group gets deleted automatically?
Point 2: Azure SQL database is a part of Azure Data Sync group hence it will not be deleted automatically when you restore an Azure SQL database. Instead, It requires reconfiguration because restored database may no longer be associated with the sync group. On-Prem database restoration doesn’t impact with the sync group configuration but it requires reconfiguration.
How to restore both on-prem and azure sql database without recreating azure data sync group ?
Point 3: In addition to the Point 1, once you restored both databases you need to reconfigure sync group to synchronize with the restored databases. Such as updating the sync group configuration to point to the new databases. Once the sync group is reconfigured, you can resync the data between the databases and you need to perform a sync operation in the Azure portal.

2024-10-30T13:49:45.3133333+00:00 Thanks for your response. Here by restore , I mean , we are refreshing the lower envrionment db (dev & test) with prod database on both on-prem and azure sql.
Azure data sync is set up on dev , test & prod between on-prem and azure sql.
When db in lower env is restored with prod db , Should Azure data sync groups in lower env has to recreated? Is there a way to continue the sync process without any changes to azure data sync group after db store ?

If you want to refresh your lower environment (dev & test) database with a production database, Azure data sync will be out of sync with the production database. The sync group is configured to synchronize data between lower environment database and the production database.
If you would like to continue the sync process without recreating the Azure Data Sync group then you can follow these steps.
- Update the sync group configuration: you can point to the new lower environment database that was restored from the production database. You can do this by updating the sync group configuration in the Azure portal.
- Resync the data: Once the sync group is reconfigured, you can resync the data between the databases. You can do this by running a sync operation in the Azure portal.
NOTE: sync group will be out of sync until you reconfigure it to synchronize with the new lower environment database.
