Hello Everyone

i have a unified group mailbox lets say ug1@contoso.com, how can i know if any retention policy or tag is being applied on this unified group mailbox.

2.I have MRM Retention Policies and MRM Retention Tags set up under Data Lifecycle Management in the Microsoft Purview portal (https://compliance.microsoft.com). Currently, I have a default MRM policy for regular mailboxes, which applies a 6-month retention period to all default mailbox folders. For user-created personal folders, users can choose from available retention tags, such as 1 year, 2 years, etc.

I would like to apply the same policy to Office 365 unified group mailboxes. Will the existing policy automatically apply to Office 365 unified group mailboxes, or do I need to create a separate retention policy? Please advise.

the Policy would need to be applied specifically to group mailboxes.

You can create a new one policy or add the location to the existing one.

Navigate to Data lifecycle management > Exchange (legacy): Under Retention policies, check the policy to see if it includes the Unified Group mailboxes.

Check the applied policies: Look for a specific Unified Group mailbox and see if any retention policies or labels are listed.

Regarding your second question, Andy David is right, existing MRM retention policies and MRM retention labels set up for regular mailboxes are not automatically applied to Office 365 Unified Group mailboxes. You need to create a separate retention policy for Unified Group mailboxes. Here are the steps to do so:

Create a new retention policy: In the Microsoft Purview portal, create a new retention policy specifically for Office 365 Unified Group mailboxes.

Specify retention settings: Set the retention period and other settings similar to your existing regular mailbox MRM policy.

Apply policy to Unified Group mailboxes: Ensure that the new policy is applied to Office 365 Unified Group mailboxes.
