Error: The set of folders cannot be opened. The attempt to log on to Microsoft Exchange has failed

I have an email account that was "title"@"company.com". The email was then changed to "name"@"company.com" and was given the alias of "title"@"company.com". Then the alias was removed and a new email was created with "title"@"company.com". The user "name"@"company.com" uses Outlook Classic and needs to have the "title"@"company.com" in their outlook as well. When I attempt to add the "title"@"company.com", Outlook adds it but doesn't request password to add it. It acts as though it adds it. It shows in navigation pain but when I click on it I get the message " The set of folders cannot be opened. The attempt to log on to Microsoft Exchange has failed. I've tried unistalling MS 365 Office, Deleted Identity from Registry. Went into credential manager and there are no office entries there. I am stumped. I am able to add it to another computer that has a different email address than "name"@"company.com".

    Hi @Randy Gray ,

    Welcome to our forum!

How did you add and remove the alias of the "title"@"company.com"?

The user "name"@"company.com" uses Outlook Classic and needs to have the "title"@"company.com" in their outlook as well.

According to your description, i understand that the "name"@"company.com" and "title"@"company.com are two separate accounts, and the user want to add them in one Outlook profile, right?

If so, it's suggested that you could create a new profile (Control Panel>Mail>Show Profiles>add) and add the accounts to check if the issue persists.

If the issue persists, please go to the Windows search bar and type regedit. This will launch the Registry Editor.

    1. Then, navigate to Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Profiles (Outlook 2019,2016)
    2. Now delete all the folders listed under Profiles.
    3. Restart Outlook and add your accounts.

    Hope to help you!
