Dear all,

A user of ours is having problem receiving emails in Outlook with error code 0x80040600

  • He can send email
  • There is no proble sending /receiving in owa
  • using cached mode download mails for the past set to "2 years"
  • tried to repair with scanpst, but didn't solve the issue
  • created another profile, it will work for 1~2 weaks, the issue will appear again.

Is it because the pst/ost is oversized?

How to cope with this kind of situation? since many other users are also likely to have this kind of issue.

Could you please kindly share some ideas on how to solve the issue?

Hi KaiDeian,

Thanks for choosing Microsoft Community.

According to your description, you said the user got Error code 0x80040600. In fact, this error generally occurs due to overloaded PST files. Every MS Outlook version has its limit to store PST files. We should maintain and keep check of it from time to time. When we exceed the storage capacity of PST files, it either gets corrupt or omits automatically. Eventually displays this particular error 0x80040600. Do you have scanpst.exe repair tool ? If you have ,you can try the following steps:

  1. Run the inbox Repair Tool: Close Outlook
  2. In the Search option from the Start menu, type the command to locate the scanpst.exe repair tool> Open SCANPST.EXE and click Browse to locate the affected or corrupted Outlook PST file
  3. Click the Scan button to start the recovery process> A message will prompt on the screen, asking to create a backup. Check the option ‘Make backup of scanned file before repairing’. Click on browse to change the location where the backup file will be saved
  4. Click on Repair for the repair process to start
  5. Click OK
  6. Restart Application

If you do not have this tool, you can try to reduce the size of an Outlook Data File referring to Reduce the size of your mailbox and Outlook Data Files (.pst and .ost) (microsoft.com).

And there are some ways to prevent this error in the future you can pay attention to :

  1. Maintain a regular backup of PST files. This is necessary and useful at the time of version upgrade or file recovery.
  2. Remove unnecessary emails and data carried by PST files and folders to prevent full storage limit issues.

Thanks for your precious time. Have a nice day.

Best Regards,

Katherine Yu
