Set expectations

Completed

Every esports program or club should have a Code of Conduct or a Club Charter that sets the expectations for how participants behave both in and out of the game. A good outline should include rules and expectations regarding:

  • Inclusivity
  • Respectful communication
  • Fair play
  • Sportsmanship
  • Anti-bullying
  • Positive behavior
  • Responsible gaming
  • Teamwork

A best practice is to have the class, club, or team members work together to create their own Code of Conduct or Club Charter with your guidance. You can start by asking them what they consider positive and/or toxic behaviors.

Let's break down what these might mean in the context of an esports program:

  • Inclusivity: Ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background, skill level, or identity, feels welcome and valued within the esports community.
  • Respectful communication: Using polite and considerate language when interacting with teammates, opponents, coaches, and spectators, both in-game and out of game.
  • Fair play: Adhering to the rules and regulations of the game, avoiding cheating or exploiting loopholes, and promoting a level playing field for all participants.
  • Anti-bullying: Rejecting all forms of harassment, intimidation, or discrimination based on factors such as race, gender, sexual orientation, or skill level.
  • Positive behavior: Encouraging positive attitudes, encouragement, and support among teammates and within the wider esports community. Demonstrating integrity, grace, and humility in victory and defeat, showing respect for opponents and teammates alike.
  • Responsible gaming: Balancing gameplay with other responsibilities such as school work, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and respecting time limits set by parents or guardians.
  • Teamwork: Collaborating effectively with teammates, communicating strategies, and supporting each other to achieve common goals in-game.
