Add-Migration works, but Update-Database says "no migrations to update". I tried deleting the Mig.. Folder

Visual Studio and EF Core problem. Migrations don't work. Add-Migration Title works to update the schema, but Update-Database in NuGet Command Console says that the db is already up to date, but the db does not have my new table in it.

I tried deleting the Migrations folder in the project. Have not tried to delete the Migrations History Table in the db for fear that if I can't update the db, then I would not be able to get a new

Migrations History table by the same token.

Based on your description, you meet an error when you use the Update-Database to add table to database.

I recommend that you keep Migrations folder and delete all the migration files. Then you could run the command Add-Migration InitialCreate. Last you could run the Update-Database again.

It seems that Update-Database throws the error at the bottom here whenever there exists a migrations folder within the Solution Explorer. The program runs without error only if there is one migration folder in the folder view. But, again if I add even so much as a Migrations folder in the solution explorer without files within it, it seems to get confused and think that it is duplicating the database. That Migrations folder containing the initial create migration and the snapshot appear in the solution explorer upon Update-Database while throwing the error below. The error is thrown on the line of code

`await context.Database.MigrateAsync();`

in my Program.cs file.

If I delete the above code in the Program.cs then it won't throw an error but it still will not migrate or update the database with the below error.

Yes, it is correct. As usual, a project often contains only one Migration Folder.

It seems that you did not follow the advice I mentioned in the answer. Could you have a try?

keep Migrations folder and delete all the migration files. Then you could run the command Add-Migration InitialCreate. Last you could run the Update-Database again.

Jack,

Right now there is one migrations folder in the folder view with nothing in it. Run the program, fine. Then do Add-Migration InitialCreate then Update-Database, it give above error in the output window then fine but running update-database puts a migration folder into the folder view. It runs fine but I am not updated for the additional table that I made a data model for, and that I updated my context for.

@John Murphy, to better analyze your problem, provide the model class before the update and the model class after the update? If you make some changes on dbcontext, please also provide it. I will make a test to check if I could reproduce your problem if I get the above information.

Jack, I provided the additional information in the answer section.

Migration has my new class model in the Snapshot, but Update-Database doesn't update the database with that table. It always thinks that it is duplicating tables that are already there. ...I even tried to comment out the "OnModelCreating" section in the context. Did not matter.

@John Murphy, it seems that you did not provide the model class before the update? Or did you use the same model class for them? If you only add the OnModelCreating method, there is no need to use migrations. If you used dbcontext instance, it will automactically call the OnModelCreating method.

The model class for that new model in question is ConstantsBusinessReference.cs.

That class is the same both before and after the update-database. We may be doing migrations differently here. For me, I make the class, as above, then build, then run add-migration in the nuget console, then update-database there as well. That's all. I wouldn't have saved the model class right at the point after I made it and right before I ran add-migration, then update-database? Am I missing something. So as for a before snap of the model class, it is exactly the same as the after.

As for the OnModelCreating, I didn't know that that is a substitute for running a migration. How would I do that, or more precise question is where would I run that from.

For your last sentence, I'm not sure how to "use dbcontext instance" but I think of that as just how .NET runs makes the tables when things are working fine (unlike my situation), sure it makes the tables on its own.

Mea culpa, I did do a scaffold of the ConstantsBusinessReference for all CRUD functions before running migrations and database

Oh right it was a new model class, not a change to a model, so right, again it there was no model class before.

@John Murphy, Sorry for the late response, based on your all description, I think that your database already has a table before you update the schema. I recommend that you could change a new database to make a test to do the code first to check if it works for you.

After a long time, Can I ask you, if I start over, new project, new database, copy all of the code from old project, publish, Can I drag and copy and paste all of the data in that database on Azure over? So can I just highlight 50 or 100 lines of data and plop it over onto the new db from the old one??

Hi Jack,

Long time. I took your advice and beyond. I made a whole new project with a new db.

There was no winning with the other one. If you could address my new snag, that would be great. One of my data models looks like this:
