Dear community,

I have a very specific problem with several documents on my USB that was BitLocker protected. Now, I have created BitLocker on a PC that has died, however I have recovered all the data that was on the hard disc and I now have it on an external drive available. I used to open my documents stored on a USB using BitLocker password, but since the PC is now dead, I cannot open my documents as the new PC wont prompt me for password. I have the password and I have the Bitlocker recovery key, but they seem useless as I am no longer using the PC the BitLocker was created on. Is there a way to resolve this issue?

    Hello

You can still access your BitLocker-protected documents on a new PC. Here are the steps you can follow:

Plug in the encrypted BitLocker drive (USB, external hard drive, pen drive, etc.) into your new PC.

Wait for Windows to recognize the drive. When you are asked to select what happens with the drive, don’t click on anything, and ignore the notification.

After the notification where you are asked to choose what happens with the drive that you just plugged in, you should see another one, informing you that "This drive is BitLocker-protected."

Click or tap on this “Unlock drive” notification to see the dialogue for entering the BitLocker password.

Enter the password and, if you want Windows to automatically unlock the drive each time you plug it into the same computer, click or tap "More options."

Check the box that says “Automatically unlock on this PC,” and then press Unlock.

If you don’t see the notification for unlocking the encrypted drive, do not worry. All you have to do is open File Explorer. In File Explorer, go to This PC, and double-click (or double-tap) on the encrypted drive, found under “Devices and drives.” The BitLocker drive should have a lock on its icon. Then you are asked to enter the BitLocker password.

If you accidentally forgot the BitLocker password, click on More options and enter the Recovery key to unlock the drive.
