    Hi, Brian Morse!

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Community and posting your inquiry regarding the Surface Earbuds digital assistant. Thanks for taking the time to let us know about this and allowing us to help you out.

    • For Android

To change the default personal assistant, use the following steps.  Please note that these may vary depending on the OEM’s implementation of the Android operating system on their device:

    1. Download and install the app for the assistant from the Google Play store.
    2. Open the app and follow any promptings.
    3. Go to the Settings app on Android and select Apps, select Default Apps, select Assist and voice input.
    4. Select the default assistant that you would like to use for the device.
    5. Tap and Hold on your Surface Earbuds to launch the assistant.
    • For iPhone

Siri is the default personal assistant on iPhone and cannot be changed.

    • For Windows

On Windows, Cortana is the default personal assistant on Windows where available.  There is no option to change the personal assistant on Windows.

We hope this answers your question, please let our Community know by marking this post as an answer. Otherwise, don't hesitate to respond to this thread if there’s anything else that needs to be addressed.

    Kind regards,

    Janette_Z

    Hello, Brian Morse!

We're sorry for the delayed response. You have completed the steps above for Android and set up Google as your digital assistant, however, when you tap and hold, you hear that Cortana talks to you. Is that right? Do you happen to have another Android phone that you can try as well?

In the meantime, kindly perform the following on to your Surface Earbuds.

    • Make sure that your smartphone has the most recent updates installed, be it the Operating System and any apps installed with it.
    • Place the earbuds back in the charging case for about 20 minutes, then try checking if there's an update needed.

Please visit this page to be guided on how to Update Surface Earbuds.

    • If it is still not allowing Google as your default digital assistant, try to disconnect and reconnect the earbuds again via the Surface Audio app.
    • If the issue is still present, kindly Reset Surface Earbuds.
    • If all else fails, please reinstall the Surface Audio app.

Let us know how it goes.

    Regards,

    Janette_Z
