In Start Search type regedit and hit the enter key:

    Browse the following path:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\WordWheelQuery

Select the DWORD keys storing the search history value.

Right-click the selection and choose the Delete option.

    Click the OK.

If you don't want your file opening history to be recorded why not turn if off rather than trying to delete the list?

The easiest way to do that is with Windows 10's Settings. Open “Settings” and click on the Personalization icon. Click on “Start” on the left side. On the right hand side turn off “Show recently opened items in Jump Lists on Start or the taskbar”.
