Surface Pro 4

I was trying to default my surface pro 4. During the default process i lost power, and now when it boots up, i am stuck at the home screen. When i try to sign in, the keyboard wont pop up. I did go into the bios and noticed the time and date are wrong. I went to Microsoft and downloaded the image file to try and boot it from a USB drive, hoping it would let me in. I don't really know what I'm doing. Any suggestions?

    Hi Levi,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Community. We're sorry to hear about the trouble you're experiencing with your Surface Pro 4. Losing power during a factory reset can definitely cause unexpected issues, and we’re here to help you get things back on track.

What “Lost power doing a default” Means

This message usually appears when your Surface Pro loses power during a factory reset or system recovery process. As a result, the reset may not complete properly, which can lead to:

    • Boot issues
    • Missing system components
    • Problems with signing in (like the keyboard not appearing)

Steps to Recover Your Surface Pro 4

    1. Check UEFI (BIOS) Settings

    • Power off your Surface.
    • Press and hold the Volume Up button, then press and release the Power button.
    • Release Volume Up when the UEFI screen appears.
    • Check and correct the date and time, as incorrect settings can affect recovery.

    2. Create a USB Recovery Drive

    • On another PC, go to the Surface Recovery Image page.
    • Download the recovery image for your Surface Pro 4.
    • Format a USB drive (16GB or larger) as FAT32, and extract the recovery files to it.

    3. Boot from USB and Reset

    • Insert the USB into your Surface.
    • Press and hold Volume Down, then press and release Power.
    • Release Volume Down when the Surface logo appears.
    • Follow the on-screen instructions to reset your device.

    Additional Tips

    • If the on-screen keyboard doesn’t appear, it’s likely due to incomplete driver installation.
    • If you're unable to sign in because the on-screen keyboard won’t appear, try connecting an external keyboard via USB or Bluetooth. This often works even when system drivers haven’t fully loaded, and it can help you complete the login or recovery process.
    • A full recovery using the official image should restore all system components.
    • Make sure your Surface is plugged in during the entire recovery process to avoid further interruptions.

Please let us know how it goes or if you need help with any of the steps above. We’re here to support you through the recovery process.

    Best regards,

    Carl

    Dear Levi,

Thank you for reaching out regarding your Surface Pro 4. We understand that you're experiencing difficulties completing a factory reset due to a power interruption, and you're now unable to sign in or access the on-screen keyboard. We’re here to help guide you through the recovery process.

Try a Different USB Drive or Port Some USB drives may not be compatible. If booting fails, try a different USB drive or use another USB port.

Use a Wired Keyboard If the on-screen keyboard doesn’t appear, connect a USB keyboard to navigate and enter credentials.

Check Secure Boot Settings In UEFI, ensure Secure Boot is enabled. Disabling it may prevent recovery from working correctly.

Reset UEFI to Defaults In the UEFI menu, look for an option to Reset to Default Settings. This can resolve misconfigured firmware settings.

Try Startup Repair First If recovery boots successfully, you can try Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Repair before reinstalling Windows.

Use Surface Diagnostic Toolkit If you regain access to Windows, download and run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit from Microsoft to check for hardware or software issues.

Battery Check Ensure your Surface is fully charged or plugged in during recovery. Low battery can interrupt the process again.

If these steps don’t resolve the issue, we recommend visiting a Microsoft Authorized Service Center or contacting Microsoft Surface Support for further assistance.

We appreciate your patience and are committed to helping you restore your Surface to full functionality.

    Warm regards,
    Jeric.
