show/hide markup doesn't work

I found the article on MarkUps

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word-help/show-or-hide-comments-or-tracked-changes-HA101838880.aspx

It says:

To quickly display tracked changes and comments, click Show Markup in the Tracking group on the Review tab.

Note  Clicking Show Markup displays or hides all of the markup (markup: Comments and tracked changes such as insertions, deletions, and formatting changes. View markup when you want to process tracked changes and comments. Print a document with markup to keep a record of changes made to a document.) for selected reviewers in the document. When you display all markup, all types of markup are selected on the Show Markup menu.

I selected all options in the Show Markup drop box, but simply clicking on the Show Markup icon does not toggle the markups on and off.

I know I can do it with three clicks using Final Show Markup.

I want a single click icon on my quick launch toolbar, just like on my toolbar in 2003, to togle between show and hide.

In a previous reply, I have now added a link to Graham Mayor's article on installing (and running) macros.

As you have noticed, finding the correct command in the Customize Keyboard dialog box may be tricky. Off the top of my head, I don't know which is the equivalent of accepting the changes in the selection, but I'm sure someone else does...

OK, now I finally found the command you were referring to. Looking in Tools | Customize, I see that the full command name is ViewChanges, which is still available in Word 2010, but, as far as I can tell, you can't add it to the Quick Access Toolbar. What you can do is assign it to a keyboard shortcut (File tab | Word Options | Customize Ribbon | Customize) and run it that way.

So, if the single click show/hide markup toggle command is in 2003, why isn't it in 2010?

I did a screenshot but don't see where to attach it.

The Review feature has changed after Word 2003. The Show Markup button that you can add to the Quick Access Toolbar in Word 2007 and later is a drop down, just like its equivalence on the Review tab.

Note that you can't attach screenshots to this forum. What you can do is upload one to SkyDrive and post a link here.

    Thank you for your response.

Maybe I am using the wrong wording.  I am using markup to cover all of the tracking items that are in the right margin, I use ballons always, when tracking changes is turned on and I am editing.  Comments, deletions, formatting changes. Also I work in Print Layout with Rulers on.

In Word 2003 there is a Markup item on the View menu.  I added this to the Reviewing toolbar. When I hover over that toolbar button the title that pops up is Show/Hide Markup. It is a one click toggle to show or hide the tracked changes.

Yes I know I can do toggle with Final and Final Show Markup, but since I have the ribbon, which takes up way too much realestate, set to minimize, it is 3 clicks to hide and 3 more to show.  Just another of the many agravating little issues with the Win 7 and Office UIs.

So, if the single click show/hide markup toggle command is in 2003, why isn't it in 2010?

I did a screenshot but don't see where to attach it.

Word 2003 does not have a single button to show or hide markup; it does have a single button (as does Word 2010) to show/hide formatting marks. The Show Markup menu just allows you to select which markup will be displayed when you choose a view that shows markup. You still have to select Final or Original to see a view without markup.

FWIW, the article you quoted is just flat wrong about this particular point. It may be that some designer had the idea that it should work this way, but it doesn't. The rest of the article seems to be accurate.
