Excel suddenly turned gray

Several times recently, I have been in the middle of using excel when this has happened:

My curser is stuck on the vertical arrows for expanding cell height and will not allow me to click anything in the gray area or the formula box. I can click on the ribbon at the top. If I close excel and re-open it, I see the same thing. The only solution I have found is to restart my entire computer. Any one have any better options that don't require me to stop everything I am doing?

I am using Excel 2010 on Windows 10.

    Hi Katrina,

Allow us to know some details so we can properly isolate the issue.

    • How long have you had the concern?
    • Have you done an update to your computer or to your Office apps prior to the issue?

For initial troubleshooting, we suggest doing an office repair to properly isolate the concern. Please check out this link for reference: Repair an Office Application.

    We're here for your feedback.

    Regards.
